What is Gambling Addiction?

Gambling Addiction

Gambling addiction, technically defined as Gambling Disorder (GD), is not a simple bad habit or a vice — it is a real illness. It is a behavioural addiction that compels a person to gamble in an uncontrollable way, completely losing control over their own willpower.

The brain of someone who suffers from it undergoes changes similar to those caused by drugs: the pursuit of pleasure (linked to betting or winning) becomes the dominant thought, leading the individual to neglect every other aspect of their life.

The Consequences of Gambling Addiction

The Consequences

Gambling addiction is a true dependency that first and foremost destroys one’s finances, leading to serious debt and the loss of savings. Those who suffer from it end up withdrawing into themselves, ruining relationships with family and friends due to constant lies and broken trust.

Beyond money, one also loses peace of mind: stress and guilt cause anxiety, insomnia and depression. Work also suffers, as the mind is always focused on gambling, often leading to job loss and complete social isolation.
